Landscapes
I have taken many dull and uninteresting landscape photographs throughout my life. I've stood there, looked at the view, gone "wow" and then taken the shot. The prints would come back from the lab and it was obvious that I had wasted yet another frame. However, I think those days are over. I have learnt a few things over the years and some great Vlogs on YouTube have really helped me to make some improvements. The legendary Ansel Adams said “Ask yourself: 'Does this subject move me to feel, think and dream?'". My mantra is more simple: "Would I hang that on my wall?"
It helps to go to great locations (although the Grand Canyon is so huge it's really hard to do it justice). It helps to go back if you get it wrong the first time. The first trip to Horseshoe Bend was at 9:30 am. The light was on my back, no shadows, everything washed out. I went back two days later at 2pm. Much better light (although the temperature that afternoon was 41 degrees C ). By the way, it's 1,000 feet from the top of the top down to the water.
Many of my landscapes will make their way into my on-line shop where you'll be able to by prints and canvasses.
